DOMINGOS ARMANI CONFIRMS ATTENDANCE AT LAUNCH OF CESE PUBLICATIONDOMINGOS ARMANI CONFIRMS ATTENDANCE AT LAUNCH OF CESE PUBLICATION

The event to mark the launch of “Mobilização de Recursos Locais – O Desafio da Sustentabilidade” (“Local Fundraising – the Challenge of Sustainability”), an initiative of the NGO CESE, in partnership with the Dutch cooperation agency Wild Geese, takes place next Wednesday (27) at the organization’s office (Rua da Graça, 150).  The celebration will be attended by Domingos Armani, Consultant in Social and Institutional Development, Sociologist and Master in Political Science, who is recognized both in Brazil and abroad for his publications about the sustainability of NGOs – for example, he organized the publication Investimento Social Independente: para fortalecimento e autonomia das Organizações da Sociedade Civil (“Independent Social Investment: towards the strengthening and autonomy of Civil Society Organizations”).

The “Mobilização de Recursos Locais” publication includes seven years’ worth of stories and learning from the construction and implementation of the Action for Children Programme (Programa Ação para Crianças) (which CESE has implemented since 2007 and which is funded by Wild Geese); the programme has two main strands: support to projects and training.  By supporting projects CESE encourages groups to raise half of the funds required to undertake their projects and then doubles the amount raised.  In the field of training, the organization runs fundraising workshops aimed at increasing the groups’ capacity to seek financial sustainability.

One example of a project supported by CESE which has had repercussions at national level, is the Santo Antônio Orchestra, which is recognized across the state and has received coverage on the national television programmes Jornal Nacional and Globo Repórter.  Located in Conceição do Coitê (a semi-arid region in Bahia with a Human Development Index below the state average), the orchestra is an arts education initiative that promotes citizenship and provides professional training for children and young people through music.  CESE was one of its first supporters and funded its structural organization.  In 2014, the group received the state of Bahia’s Commendation for Cultural Merit.

“The programme has many merits, but the greatest of these, in my view, it that it alerts popular groups to the imperative of fundraising for significant social causes.  This is exactly what CESE promotes through the Action for Children – the stimulus and support for fundraising by groups and communities so that their causes achieve greater reach and action”, reflects consultant Domingos Armani.

The Action for Children Programme was the reason that CESE was awarded the 2013 Prêmio ODM Brasil (Brazil MDG Award), an initiative of the Brazilian government, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which encourages activities, programmes and projects that contribute to the fulfilment of the Millennium Development Goals.

NGOS AND SUSTAINABILITY

On the same night (27), Domingos Armani will chair a  debate about the “Sustainability of Civil Society Organizations”, with Lucyvanda Moura, consultant for the Action for Children Programme, and Sônia Mota, CESE’s Executive Director. The discussion will be attended by leaders from 35 invited organizations (supported by the programme), as well as political administrators and representatives from grass roots movements from Salvador and the Metropolitan Region.

This programme forms part of the calendar of activities for the Action for Children Programme’s Evaluation Meeting, which takes place on 27 and 28 May at CESE, and aims to bring together the organizations supported by the programme in order to evaluate organizational dynamics, identify fundraising learning and systematize group recommendations for CESE.
