International Women’s Strike marks demonstration on 8 March

On 8 March, the scenario of setbacks and the loss of rights led hundreds of women around the world to take to the streets.  The International Women’s Strike is a protest against feminicide, labour/economic exploitation and the dehumanization and de-hierarchization of women.

Demonstrations this year in Brazil were mainly centred around the Social Security Reform, which, amongst other proposed changes, equalizes the retirement age of male and female, rural and urban, workers, at 65 years old, with 25 years of contribution.

These activities also mobilized women in Argentina, who last year held stoppages with the slogan NI UNA MENOS (“not one fewer”) to denounce the killings of women simply for being women.

In Salvador, thousands of women left Piedade Square and marched towards the Social Security building in the Comercio neighbourhood.  The women requested greater respect, freedom to make decisions about their own bodies and the right to Social Security.  Photos of the event can be found here: https://goo.gl/jmMyIf
