Web series “The city, an arena for rights!”

CESE launch the web series “The city, an arena for rights!” on its YouTube channel. Over three videos (narrated in English and with English subtitles), the series portrays the struggle of the housing movement, and the black, women’s and young people’s movements for the Right to the City, in other words, for access to work, adequate food, housing, health and education, but also for the right to participate, for the collective power to transform the city, to make it fairer and truly democratic.

The first video Housing movements constructing the Right to the City” focuses on the right to housing and looks at the experience of the Zero Evictions Campaign coordinating resistance to removals, particularly during the pandemic.

The second video “Young people from the peripheries constructing the Right to the City” looks at the struggle for rights addressed by young people’s organizations and their potential to transform society. The video outlines the main problems and violations experienced by this section of the population, such as the genocide of black youth, racism, police violence, the denial of the right to education and the lack of services.  It looks at the experience of the Homeless Movement of Bahia (Movimento Sem Teto da Bahia: MSTB) tackling the challenges for young people trying to exercise their rights.

The title of the third and final video in the web series “The city, an arena for rights!” is “Black and women’s movements constructing the Right to the City”. This talks about how the daily problems we face in cities do not affect everybody in the same way, but particularly impact on black, trans and indigenous women. It looks at the experience of the Women’s Forum of Pernambuco in its struggle for rights in the state and throughout Brazil.

The web series “The city, an arena for rights!” is a CESE initiative, supported by Misereor and produced by Coletivo Trama.
